چکیده

Introduction Excess use of nutrients over the last several decades has caused significant water quality and health issues on a global scale. In the U.S., the impact of nutrient pollution has been identified as one of the most widespread, costly, and challenging environmental problems in the 21st century.1 Nutrient pollution causes excess algae growth (i.e., algal blooms) over large bodies of water, which has a significant impact on the environment, human health, and the economy. Algal blooms consume significant amounts of oxygen and thus deprive fish, shellfish, and other aquatic organisms of the oxygen needed to survive. In addition, algae can have a negative impact on human health by emitting toxins that can cause stomach aches, rashes, and more serious health issues. It is estimated that the U.S. tourism industry loses approximately $1 billion annually because of algae-related decreases in fishing and recreational activities.2

Determination of total nitrogen in aqueous samples using persulfate digestion

Determination of total nitrogen in aqueous samples after potassium persulfate digestion compared favorably in both precision and nitrogen recovery with determinations obtained using Kjeldahl digestion. The determination of total nitrogen (TN = inorganic and organic fixed nitrogen) has largely depended either on acid Kjeldahl digestion ( cf. Strickland and Parsons 1972) or on photo-oxidation (Ar...

Improvement of the wet-oxidation procedure for simultaneous determination of particulate organic nitrogen and phosphorus collected on filters

A new digestion technique is presented for simultaneous analysis of particulate organic nitrogen (PON) and particulate organic phosphorus (POP) collected on filters. This method is based on a standard persulfate digestion procedure at 120°C and adapted from a former method for the simultaneous determinat~on of total nitrogen and total phosphorus in natural waters. Comparisons 1~1th usual method...

Simultaneous determination of particulate organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus collected on filters, using a semi- automatic wet-oxidation method

A wet-oxidation method is presented for determining simultaneously particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate organic nitrogen (PON) and particulate organic phosphorus (POP) collected on filters. Conversion of POC, PON and POP to inorganic products, carbon dioxide, nitrate+nitrite and soluble reactive phosphate respectively, is performed by a persulfate wet-oxidation in slight alkaline condi...

Evaluation of Kjeldahl Digestion Method

The evaluation of the Kjeldahl digestion method was investigated by comparing measured values of total nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium using three salt and catalyst mixture in Standard Kjeldahl digestion method and Salicylic acid Modification method with certified values of plant material as well as comparison was made for determination of total nitrogen from steam distillation method verses...

The effects of post-persulfate-digestion procedures on total phosphorus analysis in water.

There are differences between the EPA Method 365 and the APHA-AWWA-WEF's Standard Method 4500 with respect to the post-digestion treatment procedures of the persulfate-digested water. The effects on total phosphorus analysis of different post-digestion treatment procedures, such as neutralization and reacidification, and shaking/settling, were investigated in this study using the total phosphor...
